Bako National Park .…Sarawak Oldest National Park in Sarawak.

Bako National Park which is located at the tip of Muara Tebas peninsula in Kuching is the oldest national park in Sarawak. It covered an area of 2,727 hectares with variety of animal and plants species…secluded beaches and trekking trails.

Thing to Do and See.

Even though it is one of the smallest national parks in Sarawak… yet it is one of the popular destination for wildlife and nature lovers.

There are variety and interesting plant and animal species…from Peat Swamp Forest…carnivorous plants…Proboscis Monkey and many more.

Plant Species and Vegetation at the Park.
The vegetation varies at different elevation of the park… Beach vegetation…Cliff vegetation …Mixed Dipterocarp forest…Grasslands vegetation among them. You can easy to explore these eco-system via the marked and colored coded trail which will are interconnected…leading back to the park HQ.

Wildlifes Sighting.

Park Wildlife are active at dawn and just before dusk…making it the perfect time to sight different animal species in their nature environment.

There are number of different animal and bird species found within the park. Some can easily be seen nearby the park office….some could be sighted deep into the park. Among the animal species found at Bako National Park are Proboscis Monkey…Long-tailed macaques…monitor lizard….bearded pigs and also mousedeer.

Oriental Small-Clawed Otter which could be seen swimming at Sungai Assam and Hairy-Nosed Otter could be found at Telok Assam are two Otter species that could be seen at the park.

A number of lizards could also be found in the park…among them the olive green water lizard…Skinky or Sun Lizard…Green Crested Lizards and Flying Lizards.

There is also a number of snakes…most of them are harmless…among them are Grass Green Whip Snake…Paradise Tree Snakes which are well camouflaged among the undergrowth and foliage.

With more than 150 species of birds found in the park…making it one of the popular bird watching site in Sarawak among birdwatchers. The best place to start is at the Telok Assam.

Besides the monkey…birds…snake, there are other nocturnal creatures…flying lemur…pangolin…various bats among them. At the beaches are the crabs…prawns…anemones…starfish are some of them which could be seen during low tide.

Trekking.

Bako National Park Trails and Trek.
The park has 16 color-coded jungle trails which offer a range of walking and hiking options. You can opt for relaxing jungle walk or full-day jungle hikes or overnight camping expeditions.

Tanjung Sapi trail is a short climb through cliff vegetation with an excellent view of Telok Assam…the South China Sea and Santubong.

Telok Paku Trail is an hour journey through cliff forest with ample opportunity of sighting Proboscis Monkey which ended into a small secluded beach.

Ulu Assam Trail is a journey through swamp forest and a steep climb to the top with a breath-taking views of Bako’s coastline. Telok Delima Trek is a 45 minutes hike from the Park office.

Serait trails is secluded where you can see some of Bako’s rainforest giants. Telok Pandan Kecil and Telok Pandan Besar among the popular treks in Park…scrub vegetation…cliff vegetation and pitcher plants among other. The trail ended at one of the few secluded beaches found at the park.

There are more trekking trails around the Park with different terrain, duration and attractions…among are Tajor… Tanjung Rhu…Ulu Serait..Bukit Gondol…Paya Jelutong...Bukit Keruing…. Telok Sibur and Telok Limau.

Travel to Bako National Park.

There are a number of travel options to the Park. From Kuching City you can either take a public bus or taxi to Kampong Bako and from there you then take a 30 minute boat ride to the Park Jetty. 

Permit is required to enter the park which could be obtain at the National Parks Booking Office located at the Sarawak Tourist Complex, Kuching.

Local tour operators also organise regular trip to Bako National Park for their guest either on a day trip or overnight stay. Their tour package varies depending to tour operator.

Accommodation.

There are a number of accommodation options at Bako National Park…the Forest Lodge and tent which are available for rent.

There are Three type of Forest Lodge…Type 5 with 2 rooms with tree single beds each equipped with fan and shared bathroom and toilets…while Type 6 has 2 rooms with 2 single beds each and attached bathroom and toilet and fan.

Forest Hostel has 4 rooms with four single beds with shared bathroom and toilets.

There is a camping site equipped with public bathroom and toilets.

Other facilities available at the Park are, day shelters…lockers…canteen…education and information centre.

The park offers you an excellent introduction to the rainforest of Borneo with the various fascinating animal and plant species found at the park.
